Invitation And Reply (A Pirate Tale)

Every month, in our local Writers’ Ink Club, we have a theme and are invited to write ‘something’ on it. Here’s my entry on the theme “Pirate Poetry.”

Invitation:

Come and join our pirate band;
Come live a life of ease,
With Captain Jack and his motley crew
As we sail the seven seas.

You’ll get more miles to the galleon;
You’ll shoot a blunderbuss.
You’ll store doubloons in your pantaloons
When you’re a scoundrel just like us.

We’ll teach ya to use a rapier,
And a broadsword and a knife,
And to swing the cat ‘o nine tails,
And to live the brigand’s life.

You’ll learn to shout, “Aye, Cap’n”
“A har!” and “Ship ahoy!”
You’ll caterwaul with one and all
Cuz you’ll be a pirate boy.

So say goodbye to Mommy,
To family, friends, and land.
It’ll be our pleasure to show ya treasure
When you join our villain’s band.

You’ll be livin’ on the ocean –
Jolly Roger and his crew –
A swashbucklin’ lad who’s badder than bad,
And you’ll do what buccaneers do.

So come and join our pirate band;
Come live a life of ease,
With Captain Jack and his motley crew
As we sail the seven seas.

Reply:

A scoundrel? A villain? A brigand?
Be a buccaneer like you?
I was thinkin’ of being a lawyer
But I guess a pirate will do.
