Superheroes – Part 1

Old Teacher Man & kidsOriginal Teacher Man

One of the Dress-Up Days at Eastview Middle School inspired me to create this early version of my Teacher Man character. Kids (of all ages) enjoy superheroes and one of my favorite projects involved having my students discuss superheroes, watch clips from superhero movies, invent their own superheroes, and as a culminating event, have local high school art students render pictoral interpretations of the verbal descriptions of the student superheroes.

We began by listing as many superheroes as we could. Here’s a start:

Batman
Captain America
Captain Canada
Catwoman
Daredevil
Earthworm Jim
Elektra
Fantastic Four
Flash
George of the Jungle
Green Arrow
Green Hornet
Green Lantern
Hawkeye
Hell Boy
Inspector Gadget
Iron Man
Plastic Man
Spider-Man
Superman
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
The Incredible Hulk
The X-Men
Thor
Wolverine
Wonder Woman

The next step was to get students to complete a chart like the one below. For the highly motivated, the back of a handout like this was a grid with the same titles but empty so they could continue describing favorite superheroes.

Name

Costume & Physical Appearance

Special Powers

Weapons

Extra: enemies, origin of power, other identity

Spider-Man red and blue suit, mask over face
Superman can fly, super hearing & sight
Wolverine claws that are super sharp
Captain Underpants got powers by drinking some “Extra Strength Super Power Juice” found on an alien spaceship
